Time for a reboot

I have been playing around a little too much with the operating system over the last few days and somewhere along the line I have managed to mess the whole lot up.

I am unsure as to when I did this, but there are one or two things that are just not working correctly.

The graphics are one part.  At one point I managed to get Compriz to work correctly with the laptop and it was very interesting to see it all working.  Later I switched it off and now I cannot re-enable the advanced graphics at all.

I also think I have managed to mess up the ACPI somewhere down the line as the eee is drinking power like there is no tomorrow.  I had noticed that as soon as I moved away from windows that the power consumption of the Eee suffered pretty badly.  I had tried to install a utilitiy to manage the power but it seems ineffectual.  I am thinking that the drivers are possibly messed up.

If I were more experianced using linux, I think I would try and get to the bottom of these problems and fix things up.  That is certainly what I would do with a Windows install.  I have to say right enough that Windows takes a fair bit of effort to break in my experiance.  Generally speaking someone or something else breaks windows for you!

Fortunately there are one or two things I have done this week that will make the whole migration hopefully a little easier.  One, all my documents are in one place and it is an easy job to copy them to another physical drive.  When you have been using an OS for a while and you are as Scatty as I am, this tends not to be the case.

The other thing that I have done is something that I really like about Thunderbird.  IMAP is pretty easy to  configure with it.  I have never had much luck integrating outlook with my gmail account or callendar.  Thunderbird on the other hand is reasonably easy to do this with thanks in the main to the available add ons that third part writers have made.  I now have Thundernbird syncd to my contacts, Calendar and e-mail within google.  This means that I will have only one account to set up when I reinstall the operating system. I have many more e-mail accounts etc, but I have managed to set up google to fetch this mail for me.  Happy days indeed.

This time I aim to try out a slightly different distribution.  Eeebuntu.  It's basically Ubuntu but it has been tweaked a little to make it more compatible with the EeePC.  All of the drivers etc for my machine should be there and I am hoping that someone else bascially has done the hard work for me.  Thats not to say that Ubuntu was at least initially incompatible ith my hardware, but it was not fine tuned.

So today I will back up again and reinstall.

Hi

If you go to your home folder and press 'Ctrl'+'H' you can see hidden files. All hidden files or folders are beginning with a dot. Your configuration files of thunderbird are stored in '.mozilla-thunderbird'. So if you backup this folder and replace after reinstalling your pc you don't need to configure all your email-accounts again.

Something that I've found handy when resolving graphics problems (I also had the problem with the advanced graphics options disapearing on me after previously working) is to hit escape at the grub loader, and then load ubuntu in recovery mode.

from there there'll be a console that has an option such as 'automatically attempt to fix graphics problems'

this sorted out my display issues and also a problem with playing movies.

If you want to use an Ubuntu-derivation for your eee, I'd reccomend Ubuntu Netbook Remix instead, but that's your choice.
