First of all I opened a new tab. (CTRL+T) and in the address bar typed about:config. A slightly humerous message warns me that I might void my waranty (I am sure I used to get a message something along of the lines of "Here be dragons" in the past?).If you have not seen this screen before, it allows you to customise lots of Firefox's behaviours by adjusting settings.

Once in, there is a form control marked "Filter" typing "browser.backspace_action" will filter out the rest of the commands until you are left with the correct parameter.
Now I double click the parameter and a dialogue box opens.
I simply replaced the number 2 from this box with the number 0. Low and behold, even without the need for a reload, the backspace key is working in just the same way it did in Windows. I feel more comfortable browsing again and the world takes on a cosy glow once more!Newer news items:
