Being a rather rash type of individual, I thought that I would try a solution for an installed application and hope that it would help with my problem. What was suggested was to navigate to home/{user}/.gnome2/keyrings and delete any files there. I had also read during my search for a solution that this would remove the login screen. I was not overly worried about this, I am pretty protective of my EeePC.
This I did, but after only a few moments the offending dialogue box appeared. At this point my finely honed IT training kicked in, my geek senses tingling I resorted to what my enhanced instincts were telling me...
Switch it off and back on again!!!
Of course anyone with even a modicum of IT experiance will know that of course this highly technical technique is ususally highly effective in dealing with any IT problm and this time was no exception. The problem has not reoccurred and I am happily using Thunderbird as my mail client.
Of course now I have wiped out a couple of keyring files and I am not entirely sure what issues these are going to cause me, but that's probably going to be a story for another day.
