As a windows user, I am pretty much used to hardware working straight out of the box. Driver support for the Windows operating systems is sophisticated and in the later versions almost completely automatic. Having driver issues is something that only really hits first adopters of new hardware and even then this is happening pretty infrequently.
I had already had issues around the Ubuntu graphics drivers which have some issues with the Intel graphics controller of the EeePC.
However I have hit upon another driver issue with linux. The router I used before was a wireless G router and I had no issues setting up my netbook to connect to it though connection speeds were not the best. To improve on this I invested in a Belkin N+ router. Setting it up was not too horrific and my girlfriends EeePC took to the wireless N pretty much instantly and connects at 135mbs. My Windows 7 Media Center was treated to a new Belkin N+ Usb dongle and with the supplied disk was drivered up and connected at a screaming 300mbs.
Now my linux based EeePCs turn. Introduced to the wireless N router, it now takes minutes to connect to the network. Is only achieving 54mbs and clearly only working on wireless G. I want to be able to configure the router only to work on the N protocol so this wont do. The consistant 54mbs though is a tribute to the Belkin router, for signal strength it is the best that I have seen to date.
Looking around, it is clear that this is a driver issue and the drivers are known to be poor with wireless N. I can find hints that other users have solved this problem, and hints are that new drivers may resolve my issue.
Using the command modinfo rt2860sta I can see the driver information for my card and that the ralink website is several versions ahead. but to update the driver would appear according to my google searching tp be a far from simple exercise. Today I am feeling pretty fed up of Linux!
